18th–20th centuries
Liberal “Demythologized” Christianity
Christianity is reduced to ethics, metaphor, social teaching, or experience while supernatural apostolic claims are denied.
The Central Error
It retains Christian vocabulary while removing miracles, atonement, bodily resurrection, judgment, and sometimes Christ’s deity.
Historic Response
Rejected by confessional traditions that hold to the historic creeds and apostolic gospel.
Modern Echoes
Claims that resurrection only means the disciples felt inspired, that everyone is divine, or that the gospel is merely kindness and justice.
